I donât know which part of my life I am more happy with, the one that I have now where all the hard work is done or the life I had before when I felt like I was the absolute centre of the world. I spent most of my married life being at home in a rather spacious four bedroomed house, raising the children. Once the school run was done, I would get myself back home to have half an hour with a sizable mug of tea and a good book. It was my favourite time of the day every time. The weekends wouldnât be so luxurious and normally I would have to get by with a soak in the bath at seven in the morning with my book and my mug. The peace would inevitably be shattered by somebody hammering on the door and asking what I was doing or wondering if I could give up my busy schedule to go and referee another shouting match between the children. Normally it would be Nathan and Louise kicking off at each other. There was nothing on this earth that they couldnât find to fight about. Inevitably I would heave myself out of the water and resign myself to dishing out a thick ear or two before providing bowls of ready brek or extra buttery toast. On one occasion, another row had broken out over the fact that Louiseâs Sindy dolls had all been stripped naked and lined up on her bed like some sort of plastic burlesque show. Action man had been found at the scene but ever the military gentleman his moveable eyes were pointing in the opposite direction. Nathan was denying all knowledge and Louise had come to bang on the bathroom door to get me to come and make him confess his sins. I had often wondered if you could still get hold of a thumbscrew or other medieval torture device and then I could get Louise one for Christmas so she didnât have to keep bothering me. I had only just got into the bath and perched my mug of tea on the corner edge of the tub. I had my paperback in the other hand and I was just about to lose myself in the goings on of a fantasy world that I could only begin to dream about when the banging and wailing started. I knew from bitter experience that the problem wouldnât go away until I had been into the room with them and shouted the odds. My temper flared, which always a good sign that something is about to go horribly wrong, and I went to lift myself out of the soapy water. The first thing that happened was that my left elbow which was connected to the hand that was carrying the brand-new paperback that I had purchased just two days earlier slipped off the edge of the bath whilst I was trying to stand up. The paperback tumbled from my hand and into a perfectly drawn Radox bath.
